Hempel Auction a Huge Success

From the four-poster beds to the teaspoons, everything in The Hempel Hotel in Bayswater, where celebrities including Michael Jackson and the Beckhams have stayed, were auctioned off earlier this month.

The famous boutique hotel was bought for £33 million in March by developer British Land, which plans to convert it into luxurious flats — leaving the contents of 40 bedrooms and 20 suites to be disposed of.

When it opened in 1997 the Hempel was the place to see and be seen. Sixties actress-turned-hotelier Anouska Hempel designed the interiors of the  classical stucco-fronted terrace in her “minimalist” style.

Over 800 people participated in the event which was both live and webcast over the internet.

Auctioneer Simon Rose said the “high-quality products represent a real slice of London hotel history”, and praised their “classic, five-star quality and cutting-edge design”. He added: “We are delighted with the huge level of interest, both from the UK and abroad, and a packed house and very busy online bidding resulted in a result above expectations for our clients.
